Sunrises

This coast runs roughly east to west facing south, so the sun comes up over the water for much of the year. Early is the best time to be out here anyway — the paths are empty, the light is clean, then the red cliffs take on a colour they never quite manage later in the day.

Autumn plus winter are the kind months for it. The sun is low, the air is clear, then you do not have to get up at four to catch it.

Best spots for first light

The coast path between Beer and Branscombe

Our own pick. Dramatic red cliffs, far fewer people, then a low sun that is at its best from about eight until ten in autumn. Fifteen minutes by car to Beer.

Salcombe Hill

Above Sidmouth, looking east towards Portland Bill on a clear morning. National Trust land, about two and a half miles from the park.

Sidmouth esplanade

The easiest of the three, with somewhere to get a coffee once the light comes up.

The field trail

You do not have to leave the park. The hide beside the reed bed is at its best early, which is also when the wildlife is about.
