The defibrillator at reception
There is a public access defibrillator on the wall outside our reception, fitted in 2022. It is on the outside of the building deliberately, so it can be reached at any hour whether or not reception is open.
Our team is here daily from 8.30am to 9.00pm. Outside those hours a push bell outside reception summons the duty member of staff on site.
What to do
The British Heart Foundation gives this guidance:
“If you see someone having a cardiac arrest, call 999, start CPR and get someone to locate our defibrillator, turn it on and continue CPR until the device tells you to stop.”
- Call 999 first
- Start CPR straight away
- Send somebody to the wall outside reception for the defibrillator
- Switch it on — it talks you through everything that follows
Anyone can use one
You do not need any training to use a defibrillator. Once it is switched on it gives clear spoken instructions telling you where to place the pads. It then checks the heart rhythm itself. It will only tell you to give a shock if a shock is genuinely needed.
That last part matters, because it is what most people worry about. You cannot shock somebody who does not need it — the device simply will not allow it.
