Local Knowledge – November

Fire, fireworks and one of Britain’s stranger traditions, followed by a much gentler market over in Bridport.

November near Oakdown is dramatic rather than gentle, at least for the first week. Sidbury’s bonfire and Ottery St Mary’s tar barrels both fall within days of each other. Neither is really suited to dogs or pushchairs. Bridport’s street market, further into the month, is the calmer alternative.

Below is our pick of what’s worth doing this month, gathered from the people who actually run these places.

East Devon

Sidbury Fireworks & Bonfire

Gates open at 5:30pm on 1 November, with the bonfire lit around 6:30 to 7:30pm. It’s a proper village occasion, with an £8,000 fireworks display, live rock music from The Revival and a hot hog roast to keep everyone warm. It’s grown into one of the bigger fireworks nights in the area, without losing the feel of a genuinely local event.

Sidbury Manor Estate, EX10 0QE — about 3.5 miles north of the park, roughly a 10-minute drive. Tickets are available via Eventbrite, or for cash at Drews Butchers in Sidbury.

Worth knowing before you go. Due to the loud fireworks, dogs are strictly discouraged for their own safety. The event is held on the lawns of the Sidbury Manor Estate. The grass can turn soft or muddy in November, which may make wheelchair access difficult depending on conditions on the night, so it’s worth checking with organisers ahead of time if that matters for your visit.

East Devon

Ottery St Mary Tar Barrels

On 5 November, Ottery St Mary carries on a genuinely high-octane historical tradition: flaming tar-soaked barrels are carried through packed streets by locals, a custom that draws crowds from well beyond the town itself. It’s one of the more unusual events anywhere in Devon — not something most visitors will have seen before.

Ottery St Mary, EX11 1EQ — about 7.2 miles north-west of the park, roughly a 12-minute drive.

Worth knowing before you go. Because of the intense fire and extreme crowds, dogs are not permitted and would be genuinely unsafe if brought along. The town streets themselves are flat, but the event gets extremely crowded with very restricted movement, which makes it highly challenging for anyone with walking difficulties or using a wheelchair.

West Dorset

Bridport Street Market

Bridport’s street market runs every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the year. November is a good time to use it for early Christmas shopping — local crafts, winter food produce and gifts you won’t find in the usual chain shops.

Bridport town centre (DT6) — about 21 miles east of the park. It’s a genuinely dog-friendly outdoor market, on flat, accessible town pavements, though it’s worth knowing it can get busy on sunny Saturdays.

Dog Friendly & Accessible This Month

Best for Dog Owners

Bridport Street Market is the clear choice this month, genuinely dog friendly on flat pavements. Both Sidbury Fireworks and the Ottery Tar Barrels actively discourage or prohibit dogs, for their own safety.

Best for Accessibility

Bridport Street Market’s flat pavements are the easiest going this month. Sidbury’s lawns can turn muddy. The Tar Barrels’ crowded streets make wheelchair access genuinely difficult, so neither of the East Devon events suits limited mobility well.

Good to Know

A Few Practical Questions

Can I bring my dog to the Sidbury Fireworks?
We’d strongly advise against it. The fireworks are loud and dogs are actively discouraged for their own safety.

Is the Ottery St Mary Tar Barrels safe for children?
It’s an intense event with open flame and very dense crowds, so it’s worth thinking carefully about whether it suits younger children and keeping a firm hold of anyone who does come along.

How do I get tickets for the Sidbury Fireworks?
Via Eventbrite, or for cash at Drews Butchers in Sidbury.

Is Bridport Street Market on every day?
It runs every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the year, not just in November.

Is there parking near the Sidbury Fireworks?
The event is held on the Sidbury Manor Estate itself, so it’s worth checking the ticket details for parking arrangements ahead of the night, particularly given how busy the village gets.

What’s the calmest November event if I’d rather avoid crowds and fire?
Bridport Street Market, by some distance. It’s a normal, dog-friendly street market on flat pavements, with none of the crowding or safety concerns of the two East Devon events.
