The history here is mostly working history rather than grand history — quarries, mills, harbours plus the railways that served them. It is the more interesting for it.
Places to visit
Beer Quarry Caves
Two thousand years of history in vast man-made caverns, seven miles away. Stone cut here built twenty-four cathedrals including Exeter plus St Paul’s. Cool underground, so take a jumper.
The Cobb at Lyme Regis
The harbour wall that shelters the town, twelve miles east. A sea wall was later built to protect Lyme from erosion plus landslips, which opened up a fine walk along the new stretch.
Otterton Mill
A working watermill on the River Otter, six miles away. Traditional milling days run through the year, with a bakery plus gallery alongside. The café uses flour ground on site.
Seaton Tramway
Narrow gauge open top trams down the Axe Valley estuary. Dogs travel free.
Colyton
A historic market town inland, reached along the River Coly or by the tramway.
