Oakdown has been sensitively developed and offers many opportunities to appreciate local wildlife from a setting where the environment is a natural extension of the holiday experience. Imagine lying in the warm sunshine, buzzards wheeling overhead, butterflies basking on the wild flowers and song birds serenading you — that’s Oakdown.
Thousands of trees and shrubs have been carefully planted and tended, marvellous for our wildlife all year round. Each year sees many birds — including goldfinches, pheasants, partridges and skylarks — nesting on the park. Our winter resident and visiting wildlife enjoy fruit from over twenty varieties of our trees and shrubs.
Our grass is kept beautifully mown, our floral displays are a delight to behold and our climate is wonderfully mild. Oakdown’s own field trail, lined with avenues of trees and Devon banks, leads across meadows to the world-famous Donkey Sanctuary — a wonderful level stroll for all the family and dogs too. Don’t forget to visit our bird hide for a rewarding, natural vista of Oakdown’s wildlife.

The Local Area
The beautiful Weston Valley and much of the coastal path are National Trust property. The area abounds with wildlife, quiet beaches, history and geology to explore from this ideal holiday base.
Unspoilt ancient villages nestle in secluded valleys, where old world inns like the Blue Ball at Sidford serve mouth-watering meals and cosy thatched tea rooms delight with cream teas. Branscombe, England’s longest village, boasts a working thatched forge and one of Devon’s finest Norman churches; the picturesque Masons Arms with its superb restaurant is a fantastic place to eat at any time of day. Branscombe beach has a large car park and the Sea Shanty café for snacks and ice creams throughout the day.
Enjoy the Country Life Museum at Exmouth, pony trekking at Farway and a stroll through Beer, an unspoilt fishing village offering sea fishing trips. Bicton Park, with its quarry caves, light railway and leisure gardens, makes a fantastic family day out with a spacious licensed restaurant to round things off.
