Guide to the best autumn events in Devon
Autumn is a great time to visit Devon – the roads are quieter, the beaches less busy but still plenty going on in the area. If you’re thinking about a caravan holiday in Devon this autumn, here is our guide to the best things to do in September and October 2019.
Guess Who at the Donkey Sanctuary
The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth is running an ‘Adoption Donkey Guess Who Trail’ throughout the 2019 season, until 17 October 2019.
This trail is the perfect opportunity to get to know the nine adoption donkeys at this lovely sanctuary in a fun and entertaining way. Do you know which of the sanctuary’s adoption friends is most playful, has the fluffiest ears or is the biggest of the herd?
On arrival you’ll be given a trail sheet and donkey stickers. Simply complete the sheet using the clues provided and see if you can guess which donkey is where. Best of all there are certificates and prizes to be won!
Watch as our ‘Donkeys Matter’ Chelsea Flower Show garden comes back to life at the sanctuary this summer.

Beer Heights Light Railway Trip
Pecorama is possibly the most fascinating place you have never heard of. This 9-acre site, overlooking the fishing village of Beer, is home to PECO, the world’s foremost manufacturer of model railway track as well as the Beer Heights Light Railway.
The attraction includes a PECO Model Shop & Exhibition, gardens, ‘Play Station’ indoor play area and the Garden Room Restaurant, all open daily.
If you’re looking for things to do in September and October in Devon then the Beer Heights Light Railway will ‘steam up’ once again to run through until Sunday 3rd November 2019.
For model railway enthusiasts – and also those who have previously shown no interest in this hobby – a visit here makes for a fascinating day out.
Talks at the Norman Lockyer Observatory
The Norman Lockyer Observatory in Sidmouth is both a historical observatory and home to an active amateur astronomical society. The observatory is regularly open to the public, staffed entirely by volunteers, and each week during the summer season and into September and October, there programmes that you can attend, a great thing to do this autumn either as a family or a couple.
Each programme is approximately two hours long and will usually include a short talk, a planetarium presentation and visits to the historic telescopes and Lockyer Technology Centre.
The following events are a sample of programmes taking place this autumn:
Sat 21 September – 19.15 – Telescopes through history
Sat 5 October – 19.15 – What is a star?
