Local Knowledge – October 2026

October Local Knowledge — Oakdown Holiday Park

Oakdown Holiday Park · Sidmouth · East Devon

Local Knowledge – October

A week and a half of science, a carnival on the coast — and dark autumn skies over the Dorset Downs.

October near Oakdown swings between the two ends of the calendar year’s character. There’s still a proper festival to enjoy in Sidmouth, plus a carnival along the coast. The nights are drawing in enough by the end of the month to make the Dorset Downs worth a stargazing trip — and the park itself takes on a much quieter, more autumnal feel once the school half-term crowds have come and gone.

Below is our pick of what’s worth doing this month, gathered from the people who actually run these places.

East Devon

Sidmouth Science Festival

The festival runs from 9 to 18 October, with expert lectures, robot workshops, hands-on experiments on “Super Science Saturday” and a family-friendly telescope day at the Norman Lockyer Observatory. Most events are free, which makes it an easy one to dip in and out of across the week and a half.

Kennaway House, EX10 8NG — the main hub, about 3.2 miles west of the park. Norman Lockyer Observatory, EX10 0NY — about 2.5 miles west. www.sidmouthsciencefestival.org · 07542 083749. Dog policy isn’t specified for the indoor scientific venues, so it’s worth checking ahead if you’re planning to bring one. Accessibility is excellent: Kennaway House has a step-free side entry and a lift. The observatory is reached via gravel paths on Salcombe Hill.

Budleigh Salterton Carnival

Budleigh Salterton’s carnival lands on Saturday 3 October, part of the wider East Devon illuminated carnival circuit that continues through the autumn. It’s a smaller, more local affair than Sidmouth’s own carnival, with the town’s streets given over to the procession for the afternoon.

Budleigh Salterton (EX9) — about 6.5 miles west of the park, roughly a 12-minute drive. It’s a street event with paved, flat pavements, though it gets very crowded, so it’s worth allowing extra time and patience if you’re bringing children or a pushchair.

Autumn Stargazing on the Dorset Downs

Clear autumn nights are good for visiting Dorset’s designated Dark Sky Reserves. The same countryside makes for a genuinely atmospheric autumn landscape walk by day too, with the changing colours across the Downs worth the trip on their own.

Dorchester region (DT2) — about 30 miles east of the park. Dog-friendly countryside walks throughout. The terrain is natural and off-road, uneven and hilly in places, so sturdy footwear is worth packing.

Budleigh Salterton Carnival is flat and paved but very crowded. The Dorset Downs walks are the most physically demanding this month, over uneven, hilly natural terrain.
